What attracts bed bugs?

Bed bugs aren’t drawn by dirt or food — they’re drawn to you. What actually attracts them, the clutter myth explained, and why you can’t make yourself “unappealing”.

People often assume bed bugs are attracted by mess, food crumbs or dirt — and worry that an infestation says something about their home. It doesn’t. Bed bugs feed on blood, not food scraps, and what draws them is a sleeping human, not a dirty room.

What actually attracts bed bugs

  • Body heat — they sense the warmth of a sleeping body nearby
  • Carbon dioxide — the CO2 you breathe out while you sleep signals a host is close
  • You being still — the quiet, predictable hours of sleep are when they feed

In other words, the thing that “attracts” bed bugs is simply a person asleep in a bed. That’s why even immaculate homes and hotels get them.

Does clutter attract bed bugs?

Clutter doesn’t attract bed bugs, but it does help them — a cluttered room gives far more cracks and crevices to hide in, and makes both inspection and treatment harder. So while a tidy room won’t keep them away, reducing clutter is still worth doing if you’re dealing with an infestation.

Myths worth dropping

  • “Only dirty homes get them” — false; hygiene is irrelevant to bed bugs
  • “They’re attracted to certain blood types” — there’s no reliable evidence for this
  • “Leaving a light on keeps them away” — false; they’ll feed in light if they’re hungry enough
  • “Food left out draws them” — false; they don’t eat food

What this means for keeping them away

Since you can’t make yourself less appealing to a bed bug, prevention isn’t about deterrents — it’s about not bringing them in, and catching them early if you do. Check hotel beds before unpacking, keep luggage off the floor, hot-wash clothes after trips, and inspect second-hand furniture. Our guide to avoiding bed bugs from travel has the full routine.

Getting bed bugs isn’t a cleanliness problem — it’s a bad-luck problem. The best defence is awareness, not scrubbing.
