The Bed Bug Network
Who we help

Bed bug treatment for student accommodation and HMOs

High turnover, shared walls and plenty of second-hand furniture make student housing and HMOs the places bed bugs spread fastest. We match operators, managers and tenants with specialists who know how to clear a whole building.

What makes it hard

Every tenancy change is a new way in

Students arrive each autumn from across the UK and abroad, often with luggage that has been through hostels, trains and other shared housing. In HMOs the same applies every time a room changes hands. Infestations are usually noticed weeks after they start.

Treating one room rarely works

Bed bugs move between bedrooms through skirting, sockets and shared services. In our vetting we look specifically at whether a contractor inspects adjoining rooms and advises on the whole property, because that is what decides whether the problem actually goes away.

Licensing and complaints

Licensed HMOs in England and Wales, and licensed HMOs in Scotland, are expected to be kept free of hazards, and councils can act on pest complaints. A documented, professional treatment is the simplest way to show you have met that expectation.

How The Bed Bug Network helps

  • Matched by postcode in every university city we cover — Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Bristol, Sheffield, Newcastle, Leicester, Coventry and more.
  • Contractors experienced with multi-room properties, block treatments and working around tenants’ belongings.
  • Ranked on real follow-up calls with the people who had the treatment, so you are matched with contractors whose work holds up.
  • Heat treatment options for properties that need a fast turnaround between tenancies.
  • Free to use for managers, landlords and tenants alike — the quote comes direct from the contractor.

Common questions

Do the whole house or just the affected room?

The contractor will inspect first. If the bugs are confined to one room and caught early, treating that room plus checking neighbours may be enough. If bites are being reported in more than one bedroom, whole-property treatment is usually the only reliable option.

Can students request treatment themselves?

Yes, anyone can request a quote. The contractor will normally need the landlord or accommodation provider’s go-ahead before treating, and our guide on bed bugs in student accommodation explains how to raise it with them.

What should tenants do before treatment?

Wash and tumble-dry bedding and clothing on a hot cycle, bag what cannot be washed, clear floors and pull furniture away from walls. Our preparation guide has the full checklist the contractor will expect.
