Are bed bugs dangerous? What the health risks really are

Bed bugs don’t spread disease, but they’re not harmless. The real effects — bite reactions, skin infection, sleep loss and anxiety — and when to see a pharmacist or GP.

The good news first: unlike mosquitoes or ticks, bed bugs are not known to transmit disease to humans. There’s no solid evidence they spread infections through their bites. But “doesn’t spread disease” isn’t the same as “harmless” — a bed bug infestation can affect your health in several real ways.

Bite reactions

Most people get itchy red welts, which usually fade within a week or two. Reactions vary a lot: some people barely react, while others develop large, intensely itchy areas. A small number of people have a more pronounced allergic reaction. The itching is the most common health complaint and, while rarely serious, can be very uncomfortable.

Skin infection from scratching

The bigger physical risk isn’t the bite itself but the scratching. Broken skin from repeated scratching can become infected. Keeping the area clean and resisting the urge to scratch is the best way to avoid this — a pharmacist can recommend something to ease the itch.

Sleep loss and mental health

This is the most underrated effect. Knowing you’re being bitten in your own bed is genuinely distressing, and many people with an infestation suffer poor sleep, anxiety and stress — sometimes for weeks. The psychological toll is a real reason to treat an infestation quickly rather than living with it.

When to get medical advice

See a pharmacist for persistent itching or if you need something to soothe the bites. See your GP if a bite becomes very swollen, painful or shows signs of infection, if you have a severe allergic reaction, or if the stress and sleep loss are affecting your wellbeing. Very heavy, long-term infestations have in rare cases been linked to anaemia in vulnerable people — another reason not to let things run on.

The real danger with bed bugs is leaving them untreated — the longer an infestation lasts, the worse the bites, the sleep loss and the spread become.
